It's a man's world, or so they say. I refuse to complain.
My brassiere-burning mother always told me, "You can be
whatever
you dare to be. In every disadvantage hides strength." Honestly, for the
most part my male colleagues have made me feel warmly welcomed and for each time
I have felt discriminated against, being a woman has brought me advantages at
least twice as often. Here are just 16 good reasons for being a woman in the
wine
biz:
- You can always tell which glass is yours by the color of the lipstick
marks on it.
- You don't have to worry about smelling sweaty at a wine tasting despite
not wearing cologne.
- If you forget to shave before a formal tasting at a fancy hotel no one
will have to notice.
- You'll never have to worry about dribbling wine on your beard when you
spit.
- If you say something really stupid at a tasting, at least one of the guys
will think it was sweet and charming.
- You'll never feel obliged to give a colleague an unsolicited lecture on
wine just because he is a man.
- No fashion faux pas you make could ever rival the taste-vin on an overfed
belly.
- You don't have to memorize Parker points to fit in.
- If you are a tad wobbly on your feet after a marathon tasting, you can
always blame your shoes.
- If your not earning enough money, you can always blame the male dominated
branch.
- You'll never be invited to join a brotherhood of wine bores.
- You've seated in-laws and feuding relatives peacefully at holiday dinners
---- planning seating arrangements for a wine tasting poses no challenge
whatsoever.
- Your audience will take you seriously and pay attention to what you say
when you wear a mini skirt to your wine presentations. This tends to have
the opposite effect for a man.
- Your wide range of roles in life --- cook, mechanic, housekeeper, gardener,
lover, grocery shopper, cosmetic purchaser, house renovator, diaper changer,
repair person, kitty litter cleaner --- have all served to peek your abilities
in identifying and describing the many colors, aromas, and flavors in wine.
- Your keen and critical sense of smell and taste will even increase for
a few days once a month.
- Last but not least, you can always count on your sisterly colleagues for
assistance and there are a lot of fine men in the trade that are very willing
to open some doors and let in some fresh feminine air!
