| Pink wine is fashionable. It refreshes.
There are alternatives to the usual White Zinfandel. Less sweet
and more food friendly. Others are more sweet in this line-up. You
can decide. Whatever, enjoy.
Kim Crawford Pansy! Rosé Gisborne 2003
Price $21
Rating 89
"A fruity little number," proclaims Erika Crawford,
"The wine has great fruit intensity with juicy fruit and
watermelon characters." It is full bodied for a pink wine.
It has a touch of structure. The nose contains Pacific Rose Apple
(says Ms. Crawford) and lots of sherbert aromas.
SoloRosa Rosé, California 2003
Price $15
Rating 90
SoloRosa 2003 is made with 50 percent Sangiovese from Atlas Peak
Vineyard in Napa Valley and 40 percent Merlot from the Levantini
Vineyard in Lodi. "We got creative this year and included
two new varietals as well. Five percent is Barbera and another
five percent is Zinfandel-both from Alexander Valley in Sonoma
County," explains co-founder Jeff Morgan. "Our winemaking
techniques remain consistent with previous vintages. Each varietal
is fermented separately in 3 to 5-year-old French oak barrels.
Its a technique that we believe adds more roundness and
complexity on the palate. Yet we have retained the wines
bright acidity for a fresh, light mouth feel."
SoloRosa can match a broad range of food pairings, from seafood
and vegetarian to poultry and red meats too. Picnics and barbecues
are a perfect match, as well as more formal dininig, including
the cheese course. "Dare we say SoloRosa goes with just about
anything? In a word: yes," Morgan contends. Find out more

Vin Gris de Cigare, California 2003
Price $11
Rating 90
"This is a classic southern French inspired cuvée,"
says founder and leader Randall Grahm. "Our 03 Vin
Gris is an exercise in the usual refreshingly fruity aromatics
that one typically finds in a proper pink - strawberry and rose
with perhaps a subliminal suggestion of linden flower and lime
blossom. There is a wonderful creaminess and sophistication to
this years pink. Still absolutely perfect with the whole
Mediterranean palate - tomatoes, capers, olives, eggplant, you
know the drill." Consider this dry pink wine with grilled
salmon, bouillabaise, onion tart or merely today's crossword puzzle.

The grape blend is 34% Grenache, 25% Cinsault, 19% Mourvedre,
12% Connoise, 8% Syrah and 2% Viognier.
