See the lighter green "tips" on the ends of the plant ( about 1"
) .. this is one year's growth !!

Ok ... so the limbs are thorney ... every one of those triangular shaped "needles"
comes to a very sharp point .. but at least they are flexible ... however not
so for the ones that run up and down the trunk .. all the way to the root ball
!!! Thank heavens for good gloves and a helpful neighbor when setting this baby
in the hole

6/10/99 .. Well we finally got this one after several years of waiting. Planting
this tree is like giving your cat it's first bath ... when you are done, you are
gonna have running scratches all over your arms.
Plant shown was just planted. It was purchased at the height shown ( around
6' ) so we have no idea how old it is. This is a real slow grower .. just an inch
or so a year
Much to our surprise, the source for this plant was in fact in Oregon. It seems
that the Oregon area is perfect for growing them and in fact the plantsman who
obtained ours said that he saw a couple that were 20-30' tall !! Now, imagine
how old these were since they only grow 2-3" per year !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| 11/1/00 PLANT DIES !!!!!!!! --------- We were heartbroken to see the
tips of this plant slowly turn brown and over about a 2 month period the entire
plant turned brown. We contacted the nursery where we purchased it ( Atlantic
Lawn and Garden in Raleigh, NC ). The manager came out and found that in fact
the plant had suffered from root rot during it's life in the container it came
in. He immediately said he would replace the plant but we would have to wait until
the following year until he could get one. This is when it really pays to do business
with a respectable nursery !!! |

6/15/00 The replacement arrives !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6/15/00 thanks to the superb efforts of Atlantic Lawn and Garden .. we've gotten
a replacement. We planted it the same way, except this time we tripled the amount
of PermaTil in the mix to insure the best drainage possible .. wish us luck !

WOW!!! we received the following email from one of our readers ...... click
on thumbnails to see a larger picture.
Hi Art & Betsy: I am an artist living at the moment at a residency program
in Saratoga, CA called Villa Montalvo. There is a tree on the property here that
I've been curious about and started searching the web to see if it might be a
monkey puzzle tree. Well, your website did confirm that by showing the closeup
of the "needles." The tree here is quite old and the trunk is at least 6 feet
in diameter. The surface is very different with that much age on it also. The
branches drop downward and the needles tend to be more in bunches at the end of
the braches. This tree looks more and more prehistoric as it ages. I think it
may may been planted when the grounds were first landscaped around 1912. I've
taken a couple of shots and am attaching them for you to see. One is a closeup
of the trunk, another is a rather dark shot but shows the dropping branches and
one just shows the estate with the mptree in front lawn. Hope you enjoy! ... Mo
N.
Hmmm we just have to live another 80 years and our's will
be like that !! - Art & Betsy
