Notes: This tree is one of the fastest growing trees. The one shown here
grew to a height of over 30' in 4 years !! The Japanese prize the clear,light
wood for use in making the frames of their famous screens. The velvety green leaves
get to be over 2' in diameter.
Other names are Empress Tree, Kiri Tree, Sapphire Princess, Royal Paulownia, Princess Tree, and Kawakami. It is said that the Chinese first linked a tradition with the tree. It was planted when a daughter was born. When she marries, the tree is harvested to create a musical instrument, clogs, fine furniture, and they live happily ever after. In actuality, it is a valued wood in the orient and top dollar is paid for its procurement.
