Strat's Place
Korean Stewartia

Fragrance: very light
Light: Sun / part sun
Soil: our standard mix
Planting/Care: only trimming for shape
Propagation: dunno
Blooms: may - june
Notes: We've been hunting for years for Stewartias, ever since we saw some in a botanical garden. Their wonderful bark ( ranging from light mottled rust to brilliant red .. some specimens of the bark are even in the Smithsonian) along with the wonderfully showy flowers make them truly a specimen plant. Patience is needed since it takes several years for the bark to truly "molt" into the different shades. We're still searching for the Japanese and particularly the Chinese varitiey. If you know of a source, please email us

5/16/99 ... We're really excited .. this was found and planted last fall. It was purchased at a height of around 7' and we believe it to be around 5 years old. The wonderful flower buds stand straight up and the tops shimmer like iridecant pearls !! We can't wait for the first flowers !!

Drat!!!! It appears that the flowers are "day-long" bloomers ... each night when we got home from work we missed that day's blooms ... ah well ..now we have to wait until next spring to capture them
