| By 1993 we had been collecting pottery for about
15 years when one day Betsy said "I've heard
about a potter in Pittsboro,NC that is having a kiln opening"
so we set off early one rainy, cold Saturday morning to see what we'd find.
We drove down this gravel and then eventually muddy road, were directed to
park in a field and I stepped from the car right into a large, fresh "cow pie".
This put me in a great mood and as we walked towards the site of the opening,
in misting rain, I was confronted with a line of 75-100 people.
Now I really hate standing in line .. so I was in an even fouler mood.
After standing there in the cold rain, muttering and shivering for about 30 minutes,
all of a sudden there was literally a yell from the crowd in front of us as people
started swarming forwards towards what appearred to be some old, weathered, rikity,
farm out-buildings.
As the crowd surged towards the pots, we were able to get our first glimpse
of Mark's work and it was breath taking !! The first pots that we saw were some
huge ones whose shapes and colors mesmerized us
and suddenly we knew we had found an artist with very unique talents for both
large and small pieces.
Mark lives here
and accomplishes his work with
a wood fired kiln that he built himself.
This single visit was enough to cause us to return for each of Mark's kiln
opening each year. We are proud to be the caretakers of many of his works, from
large pots to plates and cups.
I'm not sure what it is about Mark's work but it never fails that we smile
whenever we use one of his plates or pass by one of his pots that we have outside.
To us, the highest compliment that you can give to a craftsman is the fact that
viewing their work continues to give you joy, year after year.
