Bud writes ...

As you will see in the photos, one wall of the cellar is the granite rock that the house was built on in 1978. Originally, the wall was the back of the garage. The owner before me had the cellar built.

All of the racking is custom built, although I think the "standard" racks from Wine Enthusiast or the IWA catalog would suffice. There are bins above and below the single bottle racks, and storage for boxes in a section I call "in the corner"...

The cellar will hold over 250 cases, but as you can see, I have a LONG way to go before it is filled. The "table" in the center of the room is part of some double-deep racking I bought from the Wine Enthusiast before I moved here. I use a piece of plywood for a tabletop. The center "table" will hold 10 cases but I use it mostly for "cooking wine" - which is usually less than a case.

The ceiling is 7'7" high, with three lights (40W bulbs). The walls and ceiling are insulated with R36 fiberglass. The double door is steel with a deadbolt lock. The floor is tile, and the racking is clear heart pine. The rough dimensions are 10X14 with an additional 4X10 in "the corner"... (the granite wall is 24 feet long).

In the cold Connecticut winters, I use a small space heater (oil filled - no fan) set at the lowest possible setting. I started doing this when the cellar temperature dropped to 42 degrees my first winter here. The temperature now remains about 52 degrees in winter. During the summer months, I run a dehumidifier a few days a week, and the temperature is held down to a maximum of 60 degrees by the granite - usually it stays below 58 degrees.

My wine collection is mostly California Cabernet, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir, with reasonable selections of Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Chateauneuf du Pape and Rhone.

Art .. well, in looking at this cellar .. I can see that we still are not in any danger of losing our "most ugly cellar" status !!!

So ... here's his wonderful pics !!!!!

Stairs to the cellar .. a great way to use labels
