Home Built Cellar

Marks cellar pictures show us just how nice a home built cellar can look ... especially if you have a talented wife to decorate it !!

Mark writes ...

Hi, I was just browsing through the cellar pics to see George and Kims "Cellar from Hell". I know they doctored that up for the photo shoot, Kim just isn't the type to have wine bottles rolling around on the floor!!! I thought I would attach the pictures Geo & Kim took of the cellar that I built in my basement for inclusion in your wonderful collection.

My wife is an interior designer ( B.A. degreed, not a decorator), and the bricks that you see behind the racks are painted on the wall. She even mixed glaze with mortar for the joints between, and sponge painted the bricks in the 3 different colors you can see in each brick.

I did everything myself, from the insulating to the brick laying, built the racks fromm kits (which were no more than boxes of sticks and screws, lots of rework), laid the hardwood floor, everything. I even built the outer door and sidelights myself, as a premade door unit was incredibly expensive.

My wife poured a little of a good cab on a sheet of white paper, and matched the paint to the dried film. Just in case we ever have a serious accident, we won't have to worry about getting all the spots off the walls!! Isn't she a hoot?

The place is as airtight as a drum, and I tested the insulating by shutting her down last July. It took 6 days to go from 54F to 58F, makes me feel good about being on vacation.

Thanks a lot for your great website, I use the labels all the time for backgrounds on my computer!!

We thank Mark ( and his wife ) for these wonderful pictures.

We singled out two great pics ... one as you enter the cellar and the other showing the correct way to pass on your love of wine to the next generation.

Here are the rest of the pictures ..
