Ruud's 17th Century Wine Cellar

When you look at Ruud's Cellar, you can imagine the delight that we experienced when we received his wonderful pictures. We're not sure which we envy the most, the actual cellar or it's stunning contents! .. Art & Betsy.

(NOTE: these are somewhat large images so they will take a few seconds to load but they are worth the wait - one you've viewed and image .. use your browser's BACK key to return here )

Ruud writes ....

I herewith send you the pictures of my wine cellar.

On the first one you see the far left side of the cellar.
On the second one you see the near left side.
On the third one: the far right side.
On the fourth one the near right side.
The fifth one shows a detail of the far left side.

The cellar is located in the south of the Netherlands, in a village called Eijsden, near Maastricht.
It is in my parents house.
The cellar is very old. It's build in the 17th century.
The cellar is vaulted.
It also has a (dry) well in it, closed by a metal grill (see center of picture 3).

The cellar is a combined father-son project. At this moment the collection contains about 1750 bottles (though some bottles are still on their way from the "chateaux" to the cellar). Ruud & his wife Marly own about 1050 bottles in the cellar. The other 700 bottles belong to Ruud's father Henk.

I live in Amsterdam, way up north near the coast (200 km), but still keep my wine in Eijsden because of lack of cellar in Amsterdam. (Amsterdam is to close to sea-level to have decent cellars for wine. Or they are very expensive to make.) ( wow -- and some of us think that going 10 miles to a wine storage facility is a chore !! - Art&Betsy)

Ruud also supplied us that a great layout of his cellar in Excel format ... we've converted it so that people without Excel can view it.

If you have any questions about this cellar or the wine .. feel free to E-Mail Rudd.

Our thanks again to Ruud for sharing this wonderful experience with us - Art&Betsy
