We're really pleased to finally have a picture of both Tom and his cellar.
Tom has one of the most beautiful wine web sites that we've seen on the net. You
can visit his site here
.. it is worth the trip.
Here's what Tom has to say about his cellar ..
One of the advantages of a temperate climate like we have in Scotland -
cold winters, moderate spring and autumn, summers that rarely exceed 70C - is
that good cellaring conditions are reasonably easy to find.
My home is big and old (circa 1860) with thick sandstone walls and a large
basement. The cellar is an internal cupboard
that was always there. It's about 8'X5', no windows, cool and nicely humid.
Just over my shoulder in the photos is
my only piece of technical equipment: a temperature and humidity meter that also
records max/min. It tells me that 13C to 16C is the constant temperature range
for the cellar, with slow movements. The only insulation is under the floor where
some hot water pipes run.
Racking is mostly self assembly modular stuff, a section of which I altered
to suit half bottles. There is plenty of space for cases, and a few magnums.
The capacity of the cellar is around 600 bottles. On the right I have a little
gallery with Carl Laubin's wonderful painting of the Medoc classed growth Chateaux,
photos, ends of now empty wooden cases and labels from special bottles.
We thank Tom for sharing her cellar with us ... If you have any cellar pictures
that you're willing to share with us and our readers, please drop
us a line
