| John and Beth S. of Colorado shared these pictures of their new cellar with
us. Here's how they describe it.
Our Cellar is part of a new construction in our Rocky Mountain (8,000 ft elevation)
home. The cellar is about 12'x16' and is 8-9 ft below grade. Thus, with an average
ground temp of 45 deg, we are able to make it totally passive.
All walls are framed with 2x6 studs and 6" of insulation(R-19). The ceiling
has 9" of insulation for and R-30 rating. All walls and ceiling have a a vapor
barrier and the floor is unfinished concrete. We had two thermopane doors left
over so we mounted them both in the entrance to form a type of air lock (about
R-18).
We've only racked two walls so far.
The cellar holds about 260 splits, 150 magnums and about 1,700 750ml bottles.
All racking is double deep except for the
bins. To the left is the split racking
with the magnum racking at the arch. All clear heart redwood purhased from R&P
redwood in Willits, CA. They are actually reasonable for custom racking and easy
to work with.
Our favorite wines are Bordeaux, Rhone and California cabs.
We thank John and Beth for sharing her cellar with us ... If you have any
cellar pictures that you're willing to share with us and our readers, please drop
