Mark Charneski's Flower Portraits

We are proud to provide a resting place for these great flower portraits. We know just how much time it takes to accomplish this and it is very evidently a work of love. We thank Mark and hope that you gain as much enjoyment from these as we do. We asked Mark to tell us a bit about himself and how he does these scans ... here is his reply ...

I am 41 and very happily married for 13 years. A biologist, I am working at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in Fort Myers Florida. I am responsible for the regulation of about 300 public drinking water systems and I try to make sure your drinking water is safe.

My scanning technique using a HP 5100cse scanner.

1. Arrange the flowers on the scanner with the lid off.
2. Scan at 300 dpi.
3. Resize picture to 640 X 480 to save file space and to make it a good wallpaper. RESAVE
4. I retouch the background with Paintshop Pro to fill in background with an appropriate color, this also saves file space.I also use the Despeckle filter on occasion. RESAVE

You want to make sure that you scan your flowers within minutes of picking them as most of life force drains out after 10 - 15 minutes. that's what makes my scans look so vibrant! If you don't believe me just try scanning the same flower at 5,15, 30, 60 minute intervals and look at the changes. You will delete all but the 5 minute scan.

Also, the selection of plant specimens is very important. you want to use flowers that as perfect (without blemishes) as possible, because every little blemish is greatly magnified on the scan.

If any of your readers would like a full sized image ( usually 640x480 ) of any of these images .. they are welcome to email me.
