We are delighted to have Rick's wonderful pictures beautifying our site. Rick writes us ... I've collected Asiatic Hybrid lilies for over 15 years, planting them wherever I can find a spot in the perennial beds and garden area around the 75 by 125 foot city lot where I live. Most recent years I've managed to get flowers on about 160 to 170 different varieties, but more than 30 of the first bulbs I planted back in the 'early days' have died out. I'm certain that lack of light, heavy soil conditions, and too much competition from tree roots have all been factors in their disappearances. I live in Canada, in Hardiness Zone 2a (Canadian) which is about a Zone 3 using the USDA Zone Map. We have cold winters, usually with 1 - 3 feet of snow, and warm but relatively short summers with as few as 90 frost free days in our growing season. The Asiatic hybrid lilies and many of the species lilies do very well here, but most of the other divisions of lilies (Orientals, Aurelians, Trumpets, etc.) usually die over the winter. In some cases these types will survive if protected very well and if they are planted in areas around the house with a warmer microclimate. Daylilies, which are not in the Lilium genus and therefore not true lilies, also grow well here, but I've restricted myself to only 4 cultivars........so far. The photos were all shot by me over the last 3 or 4 years. I always try to take the photos on days which are overcast but bright, so the light is diffuse and there are fewer shadows. The colour is much more accurate this way, but after scanning the photos, I will touch up the colour if necessary to make it as accurate as I can.
