Daniel Rogov's
Feasting on Sausages

Sausages are loaded with fat, cholesterol, nitrates, calories and all sorts of things that we are told
are "bad for us". Despite that, Ernest Hemingway was probably right when he wrote that during his days in Paris "there was nothing better for my spirit or my stomach than to wander into a friendly brasserie, there to devour a plate of sausages and one or two large glasses of icy-cold beer. There is no need to fly to Paris, and following are recommendations for several local places where the sausages will always be good and the beer always cold. Unless otherwise noted, the bill for two, including sausages and beer at each of these places will come to under NIS 150.

Coffee Bar, Yad Charutzim 13, Tel Aviv. The merguez sausages here, which are crisp, greaseless and have flavors that burst forward on the palate are as good as you will taste outside of Morocco or Paris. Served with sliced potatoes fried together with onions, these sausages make an ideal light meal. Open daily from 07:00 - 24:00 or later. Telephone 03: 6889696

Itamar, Rothschild 12, Tel Aviv: If pork sausages are among your passions, do not miss the andouilettes offered at this friendly bar-bistro. So firm, fat, spicy and delicious are these that it is easy to understand why this is one of the most beloved of French country-style dishes. Served with a potato puree which is blended together with sharp cheese, the dish is quite enough for a full meal. Open Sunday - Friday 12:00 - 02:00 and on Saturday from 19:00. Tel: 03 5177403.

Hess, HaMasger 4, in the industrial park of Ra'anana: Swiss and German sausages and pickled, dried meats are the specialty here. Literally everything is excellent but among my own favorites are the fried kalbsbratwurst (sausages made from veal); the Thuringer Landlebewurst (a highly seasoned liver-based sausage); the bunderfleish (pickled, dried beef) and the weisswurst, which is mild a Munich style veal sausage. To fill out your meal, be sure to try the exquisite potato salad. Open Monday - Thursday from 10:00 - 18:00 and on Friday until 14:30. Tel: 09 7442180. Kosher.
